Research Statement

Physiologic systems exhibit great complexity and variety in health and illness. The temporal behaviors and structural patterns characterizing these systems defy the laws of linearity, reductionism, and classical homeostasis. The study of physiologic systems based on theories and insights adapted from the study of complex systems, for example, nonlinear dynamics, fractals, and "chaos theory", promises to have a far-reaching influence on biology and medicine. My specific focus is on this emerging area of biomedical research, which involves the prediction, diagnosis, and prognosis of life threatening diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), based on the development, application, and evaluation of concepts and computational paradigms derived from complex systems science.
